Below is a listing of photographic terms as they might apply to a newbie used panty seller. Contrast:
The difference between the lightest and darkest areas of am image. The bigger the difference, the more contrast exists.

DPI (dots per square inch) and PPI (pixels per square inch):
A measurement of the resolution of a digital photo or digital device, including digital cameras and printers. The higher the number, the greater the resolution.

File Size:
The amount of storage space an image takes up, most often measured in kilobytes (K, KB) or megabytes (M, MB), and determined by both image resolution and image type.

GIF (.gif):
A compressed image type that allows for no loss of detail, with a color range suitable for the web but not for printing. GIF’s are most often associated with web graphics–such as banners–and can be animated. File sizes cannot be made as small as a JPEG.

Image Resolution:
The number of pixels in a digital image; defining how much storage space an image file takes up. Web graphics are typically set to 72 pixels per square inch (ppi), whereas print images are often set to 300 ppi.

Image Dimension:
The physical display of length and width of a digital image, most often measured in pixels (i.e. 550px X 825px) although this may also be explained in centimeters or inches.

Image type:
Also called image format or image extension, it refers to how the image is saved. The most commonly used image types for digital photos are JPEG, GIF, TIFF, PNG, and RAW.

JPEG (.jpg):
A compressed image file type which allows for smaller file sizes and less storage space. The majority of digital cameras store images in this format. It results in loss of some detail but is more than adequate, and most often used, for digital display. JPEG files, however, do not make for clean, crisp banners and other web graphics.

Megabyte (MB):
A measurement of data storage equal to 1024 kilobytes (KB).

Megapixel (MP):
Equal to one million pixels.

Pixel:
Usually tiny colored dots, they are they building blocks of a digital image. The more pixels a photo has, the sharper its resolution is. The more pixels an image has, the larger the file size is (the more storage space it takes up).

PNG (.png):
A compressed file type which allows for a full, rich range of color and does not compromise image clarity. As compared to a JPEG, it creates a larger file and cleaner image but is not always an option for digital cameras or supported by certain photo editing software. PNG files can have transparent portions associated with the images, whereas JPEG’s cannot–a great feature for creating graphics out of your digital photos.

RAW:
An image file type taken/stored by a camera without any compression–unprocessed, or ‘raw’–that cannot be edited or printed, and is specific to camera companies. RAW files take up a lot of storage space. In order to edit an image the RAW file it is often compressed to another file type (JPEG, PNG), either by using internal camera settings or specific computer software.

Saturation:
The richness and intensity of colors within an image.

TIFF (.tif):
An uncompressed, large file type that takes up a lot of storage space. TIFF images can be edited with specialized software, unlike RAW images, but are not generally used for web display due to their extreme size.
